In order to get rid of clogs inside of drain plumbing a few simple steps need to be adhered to. The first and foremost is to shut off the water supply to the area where the repairs are being made. This is very important so there are no accidents where someone turns on the h2o early.
Before starting a project such as this the water supply should be turned off so there are no additional messes if the pipes are removed. In order to shut off the water at the sink, the individual water lines have shut off valves so turning them off will suffice. If the work being done is in an area where there are no shut off valves then shutting down the supply to the structure is recommended.
The most important tool to have when combating clogs is a plunger and these are purchased at a home improvement store quite cheaply. Other tools include a plumber snake or auger tool that is inserted into the drainage tube. Also having a rag handy will work for closing up secondary openings in the drainage area.
If the area being worked on is a bathroom sink with an overflow opening or a double sink in a kitchen then a rag is required. The reason for the rag is because the overflow opening and the second sink drainage hole will need to be plugged up. This is because it will then provide plenty of suction power for the plunger to break the clog loose.
If the plunger fails to remove the stoppage then the problem may be in the trap or further into the drainage system. Should that be the case then the pipes will need to be removed and checked for any signs of blockage. In order to remove the parts, a pipe wrench is required and is used for loosening up the fittings that connect the tubes.
The trap fittings can be removed with by hand if they are made from PVC material, however if they are made of metal a pipe wrench will be required. Upon removing the trap unit it should be inspected for any blocking type debris and if it is clean the horizontal tube is next to come off. The same process used when removing the trap assembly can be copied to remove the horizontal tube.
Once the horizontal tube has been removed a person will make use of the snake or auger. This tool has a retractable cable system with a set of brushes on the end. When the cable is inserted into the pipe and reaches the blockage, a handle on the tool is used to turn the brushes and breaks the blockage free.
Should the debris not come free on the first pass with the snake, the cable can be pulled out a few inches and reinserted. Once the blocking material has been removed then the pipes can be reassembled the way they were removed. After assembling the drain plumbing the water is turned back on and let it run for a few minutes. In the event that the clog is not totally gone a plunger can be used to break up the remnants of the clog so it will pass. Conduct with Toronto plumbers if you have any concerns.
